Title: What Life Takes Away

Summary: Watanuki tries deal with the loss.

 

 

A gentle breeze blew through the open kitchen window and ruffled Kimihiro's hair. It tugged playfully at the towel covering a tray of vegetables until he snatched it away and sent it into the oven, crumpled towel dropped into the sink.  

 

He didn't want company and he certainly didn't want to feed all those that were to descend upon his dining room in several hours. Damn Yuuko and her meddling ways. He was perfectly fine without being forced to socialise with every other person that wandered their way through her antique shop. 

 

His fist tightened around the knife in his hand before flinging the door of the refrigerator open. He stared into the depths, all the while contemplating mass homicide during dinner and it wasn't as if his roast would go to waste anyway. He pulled out the bowl of perfectly cut fruit and closed the door. As he turned away, he caught a glimpse of the single photo adorning the appliance. He never heard the bowl shatter as it slipped from his fingers to the ground. 

 

Shizuka's stoic face stared at him and unless someone knew him, it would be thought that he didn't care about anything. But Kimihiro knew; could see the light shining in his eyes and the miniscule tilt to his mouth, enjoying himself just way too much at what was, Kimihiro remembered, his expense. 

 

He missed the stupid food orders; he missed pouring copious amounts of alcohol; he missed the warmth that had been gone too long from the apartment. 

 

He'd often been told that returning his life to what it was would likely never happen again and sometimes he was close to believing it, but then he'd remember the tenacious idiot who couldn't help but follow him around and a small ray of hope would grow. 

 

The timer on the stove began to beep at him and he moved the pan off the heat, leaving the mess on the floor for just a little longer. His gaze darted to the picture and he made a silent promise: he would find who'd done this and take Shizuka back. Whatever it took.
