Title: Reality Bites (mutters something about sucky titles)

Rating: PG
Pairing: Zoro/Sanji

Summary: Real life doesn’t always have a happy ending.

A/N: I feel the sudden need for the back story on this. Nergh~

“…and they lived happily ever after.”

Droopy eyes looked at him and a sleepy smile touched rosy cheeks. A small yawn and little lips smacked together, body snuggling further into the blankets. “Good stowy. Night night, papa.”

A gentle kiss was laid on wispy blonde hair and fingers touched a smooth cheek. A tiny sigh and his mouth turned up. He placed the story book aside and left the room, closing the door quietly.

He silently moved to the window and gazed out at the waning horizon, the brilliance of orange and purple casting beautiful reflections on the far reaching waters.

Eyes gazed unseeing at the view, thoughts and memories turned inward and he could feel the dull ache brace itself against his heart, prodding at the cracks and searching for an opening big enough to try and swallow him whole. He was stronger than that… believed he was stronger than that and he still had a purpose, a reason to keep himself from doing something idiotically stupid and sparing himself from the wrath of the voice in his head that carried him on.

He had always heard that if you waited long enough, happiness would come to you and you would be filled with joy and love and all the flowers and bullshit that went with it. Those people had obviously never lost what mattered most.

He wasn’t the type to have an ever after. He wasn’t the type to play happy homes with kids squealing in the yard, a big dog slobbering over the furniture and a partner screaming abuse at him for leaving his shitty dirty laundry on the floor again.

But maybe… His eyes flicked to a colourful drawing on the wall. Maybe he could have a little girl and live beside a mythical ocean. Maybe he could teach the kid how to scream abuse for being a shitty father. Maybe she would do that anyway without help from him.

Maybe one day he would get his fairytale ending, but for now he’d just keep on living.

~~~
“Promise?”
“I…”
“Promise me!” Blue blazed at him from under blood soaked hair. “Please?”
Don’t ask like that, dammit! “I will.”
He was given a tired smirk and cold fingers touched his lips. He grabbed them and held on, trying to keep them together just a little longer. Blond head lolled to the side, peaceful, calm, graceful even when all was done.
He heart ached and he wanted to take it back, take it all back. If he hadn’t said yes maybe he wouldn’t be sitting alone with his dead lover in the middle of a battlefield, maybe everything would have been fine, maybe they could have been a…
A sob caught in his throat and with a final unheard declaration, allowed the blinding rage to overcome him. Throwing himself at anything and everyone, destroying all paths and vowing that no matter what, he would walk away because he had something important to do…someone waiting for him.
At first I thought it was Sanji speaking (the blonde kid and the liberal use of the word "shitty" threw me off), but it was Zoro? So Zoro is kind of living the life that Sanji would have lived now?
No kidding it wasn't his style....
This is so sad, and so good... I'd sure love to hear the backstory, but even like this it's awesome.
