A/N: I was aiming for angst. Did it work?

The tide ebbed and flowed before his eyes; sunrise to sunset, time was meaningless. No end, no beginning. A stand still in life and if he took one step forward, he would be granted relief as it swept him away.

 

But he didn’t, he couldn’t.

 

A promise, an oath, a vow given when all was nearly lost and here he stood, on the blurry edge waiting, just waiting when all he needed was a little push. He looked down and he could see the jagged points of life’s end and with eyes closed he took that step, into nothingness where he could rest.

 

A tug at his shirt had him spinning, arms flailing and hell if he didn’t smell cigarettes on the breeze. He looked down and saw the jagged points and slowly turned back to the shore.

 

A vow, a promise. The alternative to breaking it was almost inconceivable.

Angst? To me it reads more like deep exhaustion and the particular gloominess it brings with it.

I like it a lot. Been there myself, once. But what kept me was the thought that a fall would only last for a few seconds and that wasn't worth it at all. If I ever fall, I want to explore and enjoy the moment. ;)
