Their journey – or at least the main one – was nearing an end. In some way shape or form the last sailing was coming soon but before that, a final fight, a chance to prove that they really were the best on this unpredictable and unforgiving ocean. He stared at the scars on his hands and knew there were similar ones on his feet. So many close calls and every time, an unexpected victory. The others had their own scars, some obvious, others…not so much.
The sound of high laughter could be heard carrying across the deck to flow into the sea, where it was taken and the memory of it would continue to linger on long afterwards.
It was almost unnoticeable, mostly because it never really had a place in the games played, but he could feel the absence. A baritone that helped soothe the childish antics of the younger of the crew. It had ceased all too long ago, cutting contact and emotion with everyone, believing it was for the best. They had all noticed but not a word was said, wishes respected and the hope that after everything, he would come back to them.
Sanji knew better. The door that belonged to the swordsman’s heart, big enough for all his nakama to fit, had been closed and the beginnings of rusty hinges keeping out anything…anyone, that should he falter, could cause pain to. It was locked and there was nothing that would pry it open.

Date: 2008-10-08 05:25 pm (UTC)The breaking of the crew after everything is said and done is a very somber, often depressing topic. I myself am quite horrified at the prospect. And Zoro' balance between stoicism and nakamaship is also rather intriguing.
Thank you for making me think more about 247 words than I ever thought I would need to. You, my dear, are brilliant

Date: 2008-12-07 02:19 pm (UTC)Well, you said it. After all is said and done, it's not strange that zoro would close himself off to everyone else, thinking that would help him be stronger.
That doesn't mean it doesn't have to be painful for the rest, though. >_<
Stupid marimo.
