Title: Daisy Chain
Rating: G
Pairing: Luffy/Nami
Summary: Nami needs pretty things

Luffy bounced erratically next to her, kicking up the dirt on the path as they made their way into the village centre and talking about meat, more meat and the shiny coin that he’d found. Nami tuned him out, letting his voice wash over her as she planned her island survey and the allowance for the boys when they stayed in town.

A flash of pink caught her attention and her eyes followed a small girl running across a field of flowers, waving excitedly to her friends. Her little dress bounced and bunched around the colourful blossoms. She finally fell in a heap and laughed, the other little girls showering her in flowers and petals. Her hands moved a little clumsily, creating a small chain of intertwined stems and bringing to the two ends together to create a small wreath. The girls exchanged chains and placed them on their heads, their smiles as bright and innocent as the sun.

Nami sighed, her eyes gazing wistfully at the children as she remembered moments with Nojiko in their own fields and presenting Bell-mère with a child’s heartfelt presents. Those moments before everything went wrong.

Luffy grabbed her wrist, jolting her from her reverie and pointed excitedly at a cart that disappeared between two houses. She didn't have a lot of time to process before he hauled her off, jogging after it with her arm still in his grip. She lengthened her stride to keep up with him, leaving the girls and her memories far behind.

~~~
The sun had long passed its pinnacle in the sky and the shadows had begun to lengthen. Villagers gave a cursory glance at the flower fields before moving on to tend to their chores. Not once did any of them think twice about the black-haired boy gesturing wildly at the little girls and then at the flowers surrounding them. The girls were smiling brightly at him.
~~~

Luffy approached Nami, his step a lot less bouncy than usual and his hands hidden behind his back. His eyes twinkled in a way that would have put any of his nakama on edge, wondering just what their captain was up to. Nami barely spared him a glance as she concentrated on the lines of her newest map.

He waited for almost an entire minute before leaning over her light. “Ne, Nami?”

Nami moved the lamp to another angle and stared down at her page. “I’m busy, Luffy.”

He shifted again and cast a shadow over her work. “Close your eyes.”

She sighed at his persistence and was tempted to actually shove him away, if only it wouldn’t upset her ink well. “Go play somewhere else.”

Luffy pouted and whined at her, “Pleeeeaaasssseeee?”  The tic in her forehead jumped.

She glanced at his hopeful expression and rolled her eyes, any resistance melting away. “Fine, but don’t give me anything weird.” She held out her hands and closed her eyes. She was sure that if his happiness had tangible essence, she’d be tingling all over.

Luffy’s hand brushed over her cheek and then he pulled away. “OK!”

She opened her eyes and stared at him, blinking at the toothy smile he was giving her. “What?”

His eyes darted between the top of her head and back to her face, his grin widening and then he bounded out of the room in search of something interesting. His bounciness gave her a headache. Nami turned and stared at her reflection in the nearest porthole. She was rendered speechless.

The decoration perched on her head; intertwined daisies – white, yellow and green – contrasted beautifully with her hair.
