Title: While You Were Sleeping

Sanji stood in the doorway of the galley, watching the antics of the younger part of the crew as they created havoc on the main deck and debated having them do something productive. He absently stirred the contents of the bowl in his hands and decided against it. Their hyperactivity wouldn’t allow them to sit still long enough to catch anything anyway.

He turned and headed back into the galley, sparing a glance for Zoro asleep at the table. He paused momentarily before wandering over to the swordsman.

He cast his gaze over the damp patch of sweat on the back of the green shirt and the darker strands around his hairline. He wrinkled his nose a little and had to wonder why he let unwashed, classless marimos invade his space. A quiet snore escaped from Zoro’s parted lips and Sanji couldn’t help the small smile. The idiot had his moments.

He placed the bowl quietly on the table and sat down next to Zoro, resting his head on his hands, and stared at his nakama. Zoro had his head pillowed on his hands and Sanji had an unobstructed view of his face. A lot of the time, Zoro would frown in his sleep, as if he was finding fault with the world around him but there were times, though they were few and far between, when his brow would smooth out and he would look several years younger.

Today appeared to be a good day.

Sanji reached a hand out and brushed his fingers over Zoro’s cheek, drawing a tiny sigh from the other man. His eye widened and he carefully moved his head closer until he could feel each exhalation against his face. His gaze darted to Zoro’s closed eyes and back to his mouth in quick succession. Assured that the swordsman was still asleep, Sanji closed the last bit of space between them and touched his lips to Zoro’s.

They were dry and warm and Sanji’s eye closed for the second that he lingered. He pulled back slowly and Zoro released a sigh, his mouth turning up at the corners.

Sanji smiled, picked up his bowl and returned to the kitchen.
