“If you knew then what you know now, what would you change?”
Time ticked forward, not slowing down but not in a rush to get the situation over with either. Blood continued to drip in a steady rhythm, plop plop on to the packed dirt and the birds overhead did not cease their trilling, as life slipped away; red through clenched fingers and breath past constricted throat.
Lashes swept over dirtied cheeks as each blink became slower and more lethargic, eyes glazing as the final moments approached; memories popping forward for a final laugh or tears. Images rolled through until the last ones settled on the person whose lap was currently occupied with a dying body.
The memories subsided until all that was left was an expression of grim acceptance and eyes speaking volumes of unsaid emotion. Fingers brushed bloodied hair and touched gently on clammy skin. Warm lips touched cold, oh so fleeting but saying everything. Palms touched and hands intertwined, holding for just a little longer.
A smile, as warm as skin was cold, spread over a paled face and fire bounced, for no more than a second, into dimming eyes. The birds fell silent and the breeze in the trees stopped as final words were whispered, to be heard by those who listened closely.
“Absolutely nothing.”
