A/N: I thought really carefully about doing this and it turns out I can’t help myself. Nono I seriously hope you’re happy, dammit.
He could still smell the potent stench of his enemy and if he concentrated hard enough, he could also feel skin sliding across his fingertips.
How had he allowed himself to lose like that? To let go of the one thing that would have allowed justice to prevail? And he DID believe that the arrests of several key people would bring an end to it all.
So why, after curling around and slipping over, into and under, had he let the bastard escape?
It would be easy enough to blame Tashigi for distracting him, tripping over her own feet and dropping her sword, but he knew better. He wasn’t the type to be startled and lying to himself was just as bad as when others did it. So he didn’t.
Was it the charming grin? The cocky attitude? The self-belief that he didn’t deserve to be in shackles because then the world would be deprived of his presence?
He was almost willing to bet that it was some kind of divine intervention, something that kept those damn pirates moving, just out of his reach.
As he sucked on his cigar, Smoker cursed long legged cooks who had the ability to distract him.
